TechSmith Management

William Hamilton co-founded TechSmith in 1987. TechSmith initially designed custom software for commercial customers, but in the mid 1990s, the company responded to the market demand for screen-capturing tools and launched its first independent product, SnagIt. Since then, the company has grown to more than 100 employees and develops a variety of multimedia and productivity solutions that have become market leaders in their respective categories.

William Hamilton, President

William Hamilton, TechSmith PresidentBill Hamilton, president and co-founder of TechSmith Corporation, has been immersed in the technology industry for more than 30 years. Having started TechSmith in 1987, Bill has grown TechSmith from a consulting company that designed custom software into the world’s leading provider of screen capture and recording technologies for consumers and corporate users. By maintaining the highest development standards and demanding operational excellence, TechSmith’s products have become synonymous with quality.

Bill started his career in software and information technology in the early 1970s. For nearly a decade, he held several high positions at Michigan State University in the areas of operations research and data processing. From 1982 to 1985, Bill was vice president for Dialog Systems, Inc., where he led the PC development group in creating analytical tools for logistics and purchasing. In 1985, Bill was a founding member of The Alternate Key, a consulting company delivering networking services for large corporations. In order to meet project requirements, the company started building its own custom applications. In 1987 the company morphed one of its custom applications into its first commercial application, SnagIt. TechSmith was born soon after and SnagIt continues to be a cornerstone of the company. Bill holds a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Michigan State University and resides in Williamston, Michigan with his wife.

Jody Burgess, Vice President, Marketing

Jody Burgess, Director of Marketing.Jody Burgess joined TechSmith in 2004 and is TechSmith's Vice President of Marketing. She is responsible for guiding strategic marketing initiatives for the company's suite of software products, and oversees corporate branding, web marketing and training services for domestic and international markets.

In addition to starting her own independent consultancy specializing in Internet marketing strategies for small to medium-sized businesses, Jody possesses more than a decade of high-tech industry sales and marketing experience with various software, bio-technology and telecommunications firms.

Jody received her bachelor's degree in business management and her MBA from Northwood University. She resides in East Lansing, Michigan with her husband and daughter.

Dean Craven, Vice President, Research and Development

Dean Craven, Director of Software DevelopmentDean Craven joined TechSmith in 1995 and is the Vice President of Research and Development. In this role, Dean leads the product development and innovation efforts for SnagIt, Camtasia Studio and Morae. He is also involved in new product research and still writes code for the Screen Recorder SDK.

Prior to joining TechSmith, Dean worked with Harris Computer Systems as a Unix kernel programmer and as a network administrator for Michigan State University.

Dean holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Michigan State University and resides in East Lansing, Michigan.

James Hidlay, Vice President, Sales and Business Development

James Hidlay, Director of Sales and Business DevelopmentJim Hidlay is the Vice President of Sales and Business Development. He leads TechSmith's direct sales and channel efforts, which have propelled the company to record-setting revenue growth over the past five years.

After graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in packaging engineering, Jim spent 15 years working at IBM and Microsoft. At IBM, he held a variety of sales and sales management positions in state and local government, insurance, and IBM’s personal systems division. At Microsoft, he worked as a business development executive in government sales. Prior to joining TechSmith in 2002, he worked at Siebel as a district sales manager.

Jim resides in East Lansing, Michigan, with his wife.

Dewey Hou, Vice President, Product Development

Dewey Hou, Director of Product DevelopmentDewey Hou joined TechSmith in 1990, and was a software developer and technical product manager until he was promoted into his current role as Vice President of Product Development.

Dewey is focused on improving the product development process. In this role, he is responsible for ensuring that quality remains high while product development cycle times are kept to a minimum. He oversees all aspects of product development, including programming, quality assurance, usability analysis and, most importantly, product scheduling.

Dewey holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University and resides in Okemos, Michigan with his wife and two children.

Thomas McCallion, Vice President, Product Management

Dewey Hou, Director of Product DevelopmentTom McCallion joined TechSmith in January 2007 and is the Vice President of Product Management. He leads the team that manages TechSmith's innovative and customer-centric products and services. Tom is responsible for overall product strategy, including business development and market driven growth initiatives.

Prior to joining TechSmith, Tom was a Product Line Manager in the Manufacturing Solutions Division with Autodesk, Inc where he had been with the company for ten years. In that time, Tom also held positions as a Senior Product Manager in the Manufacturing Division and as a Senior Application Engineer in MCAD Sales.

Tom has over 18 years of experience in engineering sales and marketing. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University. Tom resides in Brighton, Michigan with his wife and three children.

Donald Nourse, Vice President, Finance and Administration

Don Nourse, ControllerDon Nourse is the Vice President of Finance and Administration and is responsible for accounting, finance, customer service, risk management, property management, and purchasing. Don joined TechSmith in 1995. Some of the key challenges he has addressed over the past decade include growing a small company without using outside financing, and transitioning TechSmith from a quaint organization where people wore many hats into a more specialized, professional and efficient corporation.

Prior to TechSmith, Don served as the controller of a human services agency and a construction company. He also worked in the hospitality industry, and has even done some software development. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and an M.B.A. in financial economics from Michigan State University and is a Certified Management Accountant.

Don lives in Holt, Michigan with his dog.

Product Managers


Rich Boys, Product Manager

Rich Boys, Product ManagerRich Boys came to TechSmith with over a decade of experience at University of Michigan, most recently as the manager of computing at the School of Information.

In 2006, Rich helped launch Screencast.com and continues to work with the Camtasia Studio product team to fuel its growth into supplemental product offerings.

Rich has a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Rich lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his dog Emmett.

Tony Dunckel, SnagIt Product Manager

Tony Dunckel, SnagIt Product ManagerTony Dunckel is the product manager for SnagIt. Tony first worked at TechSmith in 1995 on the development and systems support team. After spending eight years working in other development and product-management roles for two Fortune 500 companies, EDS and Fidelity National Financial, he rejoined the TechSmith team as a product manager in 2003.

Under Tony’s leadership, SnagIt has won five awards from PC Magazine and has maintained its position as the most highly acclaimed and best-selling screen-capture tool on the market.

Tony holds a bachelor's degree in business information systems and an MBA from Central Michigan University. He lives in Williamston, Michigan, with his wife and two children.

Dirk Frazier, Screencast.com Product Manager

Dirk Frazier, Screencast.com Product ManagerDirk Frazier is the product manager for Screencast.com, TechSmith's media hosting solution for business and academic professionals who want to share multimedia content on the Web.

Prior to joining TechSmith, Dirk held a variety of management positions in the plastics and automotive paint industries in addition to product management for a customizable off-the-shelf database solution.

In 2004, Dirk joined TechSmith as the Morae Sales Consultant and held a key position in communicating customer needs with product management. Most recently, Dirk was a Sales Engineer which supported all of TechSmith's products.

Dirk holds a bachelor's degree in political science and history from the University of Kansas. He resides in DeWitt Michigan with his wife Heidi and their pets.

Shane Lovellette, Morae and UserVue Product Manager

Shane Lovelette, Morae Product ManagerShane Lovellette is the product manager for Morae and UserVue. Shane came to TechSmith with over eight years of management and production experience in video and television.

In 2004, Shane helped TechSmith introduce Morae, the first all-digital solution that records and synchronizes user and system data for the analysis of human-computer interaction. In that time, Morae has become the gold standard for usability testing and user experience research.

Shane holds a bachelor's degree in television, radio, and film production from Syracuse University and an MBA from Michigan State University. Shane resides in DeWitt, Michigan, with his wife and two children.

Troy Stein, Camtasia Studio Product Manager

Troy Stein, Camtasia Studio Product ManagerTroy Stein is the product manager for Camtasia Studio. He has over a decade of experience in technology services and product management and has worked with startups, Fortune 500 companies and small businesses. In addition to spearheading the strategic product roadmap and promotion of Camtasia Studio, he collaborates with TechSmith’s development team to ensure that customers’ feature requests and concerns are addressed in every new release. Under Troy’s direction, Camtasia Studio has become the world’s most popular screen-recording application.

Troy holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. Troy resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife and five children.

Betsy Weber, Chief Evangelist

Betsy Weber, Chief EvangelistBetsy Weber joined TechSmith in 2000 and is the company's Chief Evangelist. With nearly a decade of experience in corporate training and product management, Betsy has worked on both the development and customer service side of delivering business applications.

Betsy leads the company's highly-acclaimed evangelism program where she collaborates with customers, industry experts and technologists from all over the world.

Evangelism was part of TechSmith’s culture and business practices long before it was widely called ‘evangelism’. The ideology was always there, due to the emphasis placed on the day-to-day interaction and conversations with customers and potential customers.

TechSmith’s evangelism activities give us the opportunity to speak directly with customers on a daily basis about the capabilities they'd like to see in our products. This helps us update existing products to meet our customers' needs, as well as develop new products to meet their increasing demands.

Betsy is also the voice behind The Visual Lounge blog where she shares stories about how customers are using TechSmith's suite of software products in practical, unique, and innovative ways.

She’s currently a member of the Global Network of Technology Evangelists (GNoTE), Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA), and the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD).

Dave McCollom, Education Evangelist

Dave McCollom, Education EvangelistDave McCollom began at TechSmith as an IT specialist in 2006 before moving into his role as education evangelist.

Currently, he works closely with users around the globe, specifically focusing on the educational markets. In his position, he conducts ongoing and direct conversations with customers in order to influence continuous product improvement. Dave’s outreach to the educational community includes attending conferences both in the U.S. and abroad as well as visiting schools and classrooms for one-on-one and group training sessions with educators. Dave also continuously cultivates feedback via email, twitter and instant messaging with current and prospective users.

Additionally, Dave oversees the TechSmith Educational Advisory Board, which is a vital component of product and educational market development. Dave works with the Educational Advisory Board and the development team to provide feedback on new and existing products and features through beta testing, webinars, and user focus groups.

Prior to working for TechSmith Dave worked as a network administrator for Michigan State University, where he used TechSmith’s Camtasia Studio to create user tutorials for various software applications and university technical systems. Dave is originally from Mt. Pleasant, Mich. He moved to the Lansing area to attend MSU, where he eventually received his bachelor’s degree in business.

When Dave isn’t recruiting new SnagIt and Camtasia fans from the educational community, he enjoys playing tennis and cooking (especially on the grill). He currently resides in Holt where he is remodeling his first home and spending substantial time wandering around local home improvement stores.
