Tutorials: Morae

Morae is software for usability testing and user experience research that helps you identify site and application design problems and share them with stakeholders.

  • Morae 2
  • Morae 1.3

Getting Started

New to Morae? These tutorials are just for you. Learn how to set up your configurations, record participants, observe and log a session, view previously recorded sessions, analyze the results, and present your findings. All of this in a set of short, easy lessons. You'll be up and running with the basics of Morae in no time.

Each lesson is presented in both video and written formats. To get the most from your learning experience, be sure to perform the tasks presented at the end of each lesson before moving on to the next one.

Lesson 1: Create a Study Configuration
Morae 2 is built around the concept of studies, which is defined in the study configuration. This lesson explains how to create a basic study configuration using the defaults in Morae Recorder.
Lesson 2: Modify the Configuration
If needed, you can easily make changes to your study configuration before recording. This lesson also introduces the elements you will use to log participants, markers and tasks, as well as how to include a satisfaction survey for participants after a session.
Lesson 3: Finish the Study Configuration
Besides configuring tasks, markers, and surveys in your study, you may also want to configure some settings about what and how to record, as well as hardware settings specific to the machine you'll record on. This lesson touches on one these settings, how to run a quick test recording, and saving your study configuration.
Lesson 4: Record and Log Participants
Now that you've set up your study, it's time record a session. This lesson explains how to prepare the participant's computer, how to connect to and log the session via Observer, and how to end the recording.
Lesson 5: Create a Project in Manager
Once you have recordings, you'll need to make a project in Morae Manager to access the data. This lesson shows how to create a project and import recordings.
Lesson 6: Set Tasks & Markers in Manager
Need to add or modify some of the tasks or markers in your recordings? This lesson shows you how.
Lesson 7: Graph Data
The graphing in Morae 2 will save you time and make your results easier to convey. This lesson demonstrates how to create graphs to display the most common types of data.
Lesson 8: Create a Presentation
Reading about results is nice, but being able to see where users make mistakes is powerful. This lesson shows you how to make video clips from your recordings and put them together into a highlight video.
Lesson 9: Produce the Presentation
Now that you've put it together, you'll need to produce your highlight video. This lesson walks you through the process of creating something you can share.

Setup and Recording

The Default Study Configuration
When you open Morae Recorder, the Welcome dialog asks you to create or open a study configuration. If you click Cancel, Recorder loads the Default Study configuration. Learn how to conduct a recording immediately using these default settings.

Observing and Logging

View and log. Learn how to get the most out of your sessions in Morae Observer and get to your data right away.

View Your Notes Right After a Session
Saving, viewing, and exporting the notes and markers you logged in Morae Observer during a session is easy. Make sure you have at least the Morae 2.0.1 update and watch this tutorial to find out how.
Prevent Observers From Connecting to a Session
By default, Morae Recorder allows Observers to view and log markers during a session. If you prefer, you can disable this option in the study configuration. For example, you may want to prevent Observers from a session that includes sensitive or confidential information.
Choose a Task Logger
Morae Observer provides support for one or multiple computers to connect over a network to a computer running Recorder. This flexibility allows your entire team to observe the screen and camera video and hear the audio of the user, streaming from the Recorder computer.
Troubleshooting Observer Connection Issues
Morae Observer was designed to easily connect to and view participants on the recording machine. However, it does depend a lot on the state and configuration of the network it operates on. So, if you are having issues connecting, this video will walk you through some steps you can take to identify and, in many cases, fix the problem.
Video Delay in Observer
Depending on the Observer options you choose, you may experience a video delay in Observer. This tutorial explains why this delay happens and how to choose the correct options for your testing environment.
Log a New Marker in Morae Manager
When analyzing recordings, you may notice that the study configuration needed additional markers to log during sessions. While it's too late to log markers with Observer, this tutorial will show you how to add and log new markers in the recordings imported into Manager.

Analyzing Results

Now that you’ve recorded your sessions, you’ll want to quickly analyze data, calculate usability metrics, and build graphs.

Use RRT Data: Searching for Relevant Information
Morae recordings use TechSmith’s Rich Recording Technology (RRT) to capture video, audio, camera input, as well as all sorts of data, including keyboard entry, screen text, web page changes, mouse clicks, and system events.  Use Manager’s Search Results pane to help you focus in on this valuable information to support your findings.
Viewing Search Results in the Chart View
When you run a search in Morae Manager, the results appear in the Search Results pane. You can view the search results in List view, Chart view, or a combination of both.
Create Custom Graphs
Instead of manually calculating data and building graphs, Morae creates graphs to help you share results faster, conduct more testing, and spend more time focused on solving usability issues rather than scrubbing data.

Sharing Your Findings

Convert a Morae .RDG to an AVI or WMV
If you would like to play or edit Morae recordings in programs other then Morae, read the following for options to convert your Morae recordings (.rdg files), to an .avi or .wmv file.
